Increasing awareness of nature-based activities in the Greater Reading Area

Many individuals and families attending Reading’s outdoor festivals are interested in nature, but often don’t actually get involved in nature-based activities. This is what Julie, our green engagement worker funded by a generous grant from Reading Borough Council, repeatedly found when meeting people at these events. Julie has now spoken to almost 500 people at four outdoor events held within Reading over the last four months. At these events, adults and children were often keen to sow seeds, decorate pots and make lavender bags, but had not heard of the Reading Green Wellbeing Network and its member organisations, all of which provide opportunities for nature engagement for all ages.

Community gardens and organised activities held in the many green spaces within Reading aim to bring urban communities together to enjoy being in nature. But people can only enjoy these green spaces and activities if they know how to find out about them, and have the time and confidence to join in. Some people felt they didn’t have the necessary skills and others were hesitant about taking up a place that someone else might benefit from more. Some felt they didn’t have time or that they would have difficulty getting to the green spaces. But many of the sites of RGWN’s members can be reached by public transport and some offer drop-in sessions that overcome the need to make a regular commitment. All organisations welcome people whatever their skills or experience.

There is clearly a need to help people find out about the organisations in the Greater Reading Area that promote nature engagement and to welcome people to come and get involved, whether it be nature walks, conservation or gardening. Julie will continue to spread the word about Reading Green Wellbeing Network and the organisations it represents, attending several more events this year.
