Growing for Change: An urban food garden’s handbook for community, climate and nature. Published by Sustain

This report, published in September 2022, sets out 4 core values and 7 guiding principles for running a community garden and is based on the experience of gardeners from 19 community gardens in London. In addition to briefly describing these values and principles, the publication presents a self-assessment tool to be used to track and reflect on progress and to identify themes to work towards over the coming year. It thus provides inspiration for how to improve your community garden through identifying aspects to develop, as well as recognising the achievements of the past year. Self-assessment questions include those related to:

  • social aspects of gardening – access, available tools, links to the local community, food production and shared learning – and

  • the environment - biodiversity, soil health, carbon footprint and water retention.

The publication is produced by Sustain, a charity working to improve food production and farming in Britain, through campaigning for a sustainable food system and better health and welfare for people and animals
