The Core Elements of Healing Through Nature
This article by Kim Stone at Naturally Mindful describes how Nature-based mental health interventions (NBI) can be made helpful for people experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional disconnection, or burnout. Five core components contribute to the success of NBI, namely
· accessibility (physical, e.g. via public transport or wheelchair access; cultural; emotional, e.g. suitable for neurodivergent individuals; and financial),
· meaningful engagement through active participation rather than passive observation,
· social connection to combat loneliness,
· skilled facilitation with trauma-informed and culturally sensitive practitioners, and
· flexibility to adapt to participants' needs and environmental changes.
When these factors are taken into account, research has shown that NBI can reduce anxiety/depression symptoms, increase self-esteem, build emotional resilience and enhance feelings of gratitude and connection. However, supporting structures are required to enable NBI to flourish, including embedding within community settings, integration within healthcare services, consistent programming, and adequate funding.
Successful programs combine nature's healing properties with intentional, inclusive, person-centred therapeutic approaches to achieve sustainable mental health improvement.
