Green outreach worker - job description
Role: Representation of RGWN and members in person to the public
Tasks:
To represent RGWN and members at a number of public in-person events per year (total of 80 hours). To engage with the public and other local organisations, conveying enthusiasm for nature connection and the benefits it can bring. The events would be occasions like, East Reading Festival, Reading Climate Change Festival, Community Roadshows, University of Reading Community Fair, GLL events, Beat the Street events
To agree with RGWN on the selection of events
To prepare, and if needed ask for, materials in advance
To prepare for each event, e.g. family-friendly activities, banner, leaflets, gazebo, table, chair, way of recording engagement
To report to RGWN how each event went in accordance with the reporting requirements of Reading Borough Council
To retain receipts and follow RGWN policy in getting reimbursement for materials
To give 2 months’ notice if not able to continue in the role.
Qualities needed:
Enthusiasm for nature and an understanding of the physical and mental health benefits of engaging with nature
A willingness to learn about RGWN members and what they offer
Outgoing and willing to engage with all kinds of communities
Organisational ability – to be able to prepare and attend events as agreed
This is a freelance role to be paid at a rate of £25/hour. The outreach worker would not be provided with a phone or laptop or means of transport. RGWN holds monthly meetings and the outreach worker is welcome to attend them, but attendance will not be paid for more than 2 meetings (ie 2 hours).
