Erleigh Road Community Garden

What we do

Erleigh Road Community Garden welcomes individuals from the local community to volunteer at this garden tucked away behind St Luke’s parish hall on Erleigh Road.

The garden was set up in 2016 on a once unused and overgrown piece of land. It now incorporates an interesting mix of fruit trees and bushes, a pergola boasting an impressive grape vine, a herb bed, and vegetable beds in the centre of the garden for growing annual vegetables. Around the perimeter, the garden has a collection of unusual perennial vegetables and ornamental flowers. Some areas of the garden are left wilder for insects and birds to enjoy. There is also a greenhouse, providing opportunities for seed sowing and taking cuttings.

Sessions

Volunteers enjoy meeting, chatting and working together in the garden under the guidance of the Garden Tutor. Sessions run during the school term and often there are additional holiday sessions and workshops. The regular sessions comprise a Thursday morning session for adults that teaches gardening skills, including growing your own fruit and vegetables, and the Friday after-school sessions introduce primary-aged children and their parents to the joys of growing plants and observing nature. The Saturday afternoon session is for all ages and is often enjoyed by families. All sessions are free. Pre-booking is recommended.

The garden is wheelchair accessible and sessions are able to support people with mild mental health issues. Volunteers have access to the facilities in the parish hall, including toilets and hand washing. The garden is easily accessible via public transport.
